DISCLOSURE

Third grade is an exciting year!  There will be much growth and progress as this is a transitional year.  The students will become much more independent and self-motivated.  In order to achieve these goals, there are a few expectations that need to be in place.  The purpose of this disclosure is to explain these to you.
Please review them together with your child.

Homework

Canyons School District policy states that third-grade students receive twenty minutes of homework nightly in addition to independent reading.
You can expect the following:

  • Homework sheets will be sent out from Monday – Thursday.

  • Homework is due the following day. Please return homework on time.

  • Homework will include a comprehension worksheet and a practice buddy.

  • Homework will be located in their take home folder.

Homework is the student’s responsibility.  Students and parents are responsible if signatures or initials are required on any documents sent home.

NOTE: If your students’ homework is taking longer than 20 minutes per night please let me know so we can make adjustments.

Classroom Supplies

I will provide all the needed supplies for your student. You do NOT need to purchase pencils, pencil boxes, folders, binders, etc. I will make sure that they have what they need to succeed! Supply donations are welcome, please see suggestions below.

CLASSROOM DONATIONS

If you would like to donate to your child’s classroom this year, I would appreciate items such as Whiteboard Markers, Kleenex, Pencils, Washable Markers, Colored Pencils, Hand Sanitizer, Post It Notes, Books for our Library, Board Games, Kitchen Timers, Pens, Tape, Sharpies, etc.

Please do not feel obligated to donate. This is strictly voluntary.

Discipline

The discipline policies in our classroom consist of three parts: classroom rules, positive consequences,

and consequences for rule infractions.

CLASSROOM RULES

  • Safe inside and out

  • Follow directions the first time.

  • On Time and On Task

  • Always be in the proper place and be on time.

  • Complete assignments on time.

  • Accept Responsibility

  • Use all materials and equipment properly.

  • Respect self, others, property

  • Use positive actions and statements towards others.

  • Respect each other’s right to learn.

POSITIVE CONSEQUENCES

  • Positive Reinforcements

  • Specific Praise

  • Special Activities

CONSEQUENCES FOR RULE INFRACTIONS

When a student breaks a rule he/she will receive a warning (excluding serious infractions).  A second rule infraction will land the student in “Think Time”, where they will have an opportunity to identify and find solutions to the infraction.  A third rule infraction will result in a phone call to the student’s parents.  Students will start fresh each day.  Any “Think Times” that are received will be noted on the student’s planner sheet for parental notification of student behavior.

30 Book Challenge

Independent reading is an excellent skill that third graders must possess.   I challenge your child read toward our 30 Book Challenge.  Remember longer books can count for 2-3 books depending on the length or difficulty. After they have read a book, please fill in the chart located in your student's take-home folder.  The teacher will sign off the books periodically throughout the year.

Reflex Math & Math Facts

Memorizing math facts is highly stressed in third grade.  All students in 3rd grade will start off by memorizing multiplication and division facts.  This requires consistency in practice. Students will be using Reflex Math in school. However, if your student did not get a chance to get a green light at school we encourage that they complete it at home.

Birthday Treats

We have food allergies in our homeroom this year.  I strongly encourage parents to send non-edible party favors in lieu of birthday treats.

NOTE: If you must send birthday treats please contact me ahead of time so that I can make sure that the food item does not contain any allergens.

Scholastic Book Orders

We will be offering Scholastic book orders this year.  I will send home the order sheets each month and indicate the date due.  Please do not send cash, instead order online.  It takes two weeks to receive the book orders.  Book orders help teachers add teaching materials and class books to their classroom libraries.

Teacher Conferencing

In order to maximize learning, we must work as a team.  Communication is a key factor in teamwork. For ANY in-person conference with the teacher, we ask that you please schedule an appointment so that we can address your needs adequately.
