We have a reading arts curriculum that covers many genres of reading. In order to support that at home, we are using a reading program called “30 Book Challenge.” Instead of keeping a monthly reading calendar, there is one page that you will use all year to record your child’s reading progress, All stories read should be recorded on this sheet.
We choose this program because it supports the genres of literature that we teach at school. The 30 Book Challenge also provides flexibility to accommodate busy family schedules.
You will notice that there are different amounts of books required to fulfill each category. Please write the following under the correct genre:
The title of the book
The author of the book
The date finished
Parent initials to verify that the book was read
If your child reads a book that you feel is equivalent to two books due to difficulty or length, you may record that book title in two slots. Standard 3rdgrade chapter books are about 150-200 pages.
For example: Book A is 100-250 pages count that as one book. Book B is 250+ pages count that as two books on the chart. •We trust your judgement in deciding how to record books.
Classroom teachers will check this chart periodically and give out awards according to the percent of the challenge completed (25%, 50%, 75%, 100%).
Awards are generously provided by the Sunrise PTA.
One final note, it is critical that your child does not lose the 30 Book Challenge recording sheet. Please keep it at the back pocket of your students take home folder at all times.
Thank you for all of your help!
Mrs. Lapadat and Ms. Dee
